Equity Indexed Annuity: A type of fixed annuity that earns interest connected to an outside equity index, such as the S&P 500 (Standard & Poor's 500 Composite Stock Price Index).
Bonus Annuity: The amount added by an insurance company to the premium payments of fixed, deferred annuities with surrender charges. Usually imposed as additional interest or principal in the contract's first year and totals between 1% to 25%.
Point-to-Point: A way of calculating index annuity yield. The total yield is simply the difference in index value from the day the annuity is purchased to the day it expires.
Participation Rate: Also called the Index Rate, this refers to the part of the index's increase credited to an equity-indexed annuity's account value. In some contracts, a cap is imposed on this amount.
